Club History
Red Brook Harbor Yacht Club was founded and incorporated on May 6, 1965. The founding principal was A. Ransom Parker (Raz), who passed away in 2005. Throughout the years both Raz and his son Bruce have been very generous in allowing the Club to use space at Parker’s Boat Yard.
There are no records remaining of the period 1965 to 1976 and memories of the period are sketchy. What is known is that in 1976 the club had 23 members, mostly sailors who kept their boats at Parker’s Boat Yard in Red Brook Harbor. The existing records of past years tell of cruises (some nearby, others further a field), Commodore’s pot-luck suppers, cook-outs at the club house, and members’ homes, plus other activities.
The club has grown over the years with membership open to all boat owners, sailors or not, who want to share in the enjoyment of the sailing experience. Several years ago an informal racing program was started and each fall the PHRF race receives excellent participation. In 2006 this race was renamed the Raz Parker Memorial Race in honor of the club’s founder.
The original 1965 corporation was allowed to lapse some time in the past and for a number of years the club operated informally while continuing to be known as the Red Brook Harbor Yacht Club. In 1985, the then officers, learning of the lapse of the corporate charter proceeded (after receiving an affirmative vote of the membership) to re-incorporate the Club under the same name. This was accomplished in 1986 and the current corporate entity dates from November 24, 1986.
The club has the use of space at Parker's Boat Yard in Red Brook Harbor. The facility has lounge furniture, reading materials, activity space, outdoor grills, picnic tables and room for socializing. For a number of years the club has maintained a guest mooring in Mill Pond at the entrance to Pocasset and Red Brook Harbors.
As of May 28, 2008, the club had 146 active memberships.
